A few months back I read a blog post about Plato’s Closet which buys & sells gently used clothing, shoes & accessories from This Girl Saves – check out her Toronto shopping blog for great info on sales. I was interested because I’ve been attempting to declutter and this would give me the opportunity to make some money at the same time.
After my recent Closet Cleanout I had a lot of clothing, some shoes & purses. Normally I give my sisters & mom first dibs on my purged items but this time I picked out what I thought I could sell & headed over to Plato’s Closet in Oakville with 2 large bags. I walked in at was met by a friendly associate who explained the process to me – she’d go through my items & pick out what they’d be interested in buying & give me a price. She needed about 20 minutes so I took the opportunity to check out the store.
I promised myself I wasn’t going to buy anything but I was impressed with the assortment of clothing. The store is tidy & organized by item type. There were quite a few new items with tags & a lot of new brand name jeans priced at about $15 a pair. There is definitely more women’s wear but the men’s section did have some good finds.
At the end of the day I made $53.00. It is a bit less than I was hoping for but I’ve used Kijiji to sell used items before successfully but it does take work & time. This way I was able to walk away with cash in a matter of minutes.
I sold 11 items in total which included 5 pairs of shoes, 2 wallets, 1 wristlet, 1 planner, 1 pair of mittens & 1 shirt.
The associate explained why the rest of my items, mainly clothing, wasn’t being purchased. It was mainly career wear which doesn’t fit in with what they’re looking to buy for their target market of teenagers & those in their early 20s looking for casual & athletic wear.
I’m happy with the overall experience & I would definitely do it again.
